A Most Powerful Advocate

Michael Phillips @wholeexpanse is not sleeping well. If you did not see his testimony on The Last Word yestereve, you owe it to yourself to take a look. He reads his prepared statements via technology (starting at about 3:20).  I’ve transcribed a small portion of his words:

So ever since November the 8th 2016 I haven’t been sleeping well. I’ve been scared. I’ve never been scared by the results of an election. It’s an odd feeling I’ve always felt like the federal government exists to protect citizens even when state governments won’t do so, maybe specially when state governments won’t do so. So yes, I’m scared.

Mike Phillips has channeled his fear into advocacy, for himself and everyone who depends on Medicaid. Though he has more at stake than most. Other than a hospital, there is no facility that would care for Michael in Florida without the Medicaid waiver which allows him to live at home. His nightmares include dying in a foreign facility far from home.

Many of us are waiting for the CBO score, ready to use that data to hammer home the ugliness of this Wealthcare bill. But, Michael’s story is much more powerful than raw numbers. I have started following his wit, humor, and eloquence on twitter. I hope his story has an impact in this fight.

I first heard Michael’s story over 10 years ago at an Assistive Technology conference. It gave me hope for many of the students in our school system. I was so excited to hear more from him. If he can play World of Warcraft and advocate for health care with a single switch, what can we all achieve?
